For decades, Romania’s Rosia Montana region has been characterized by economic decline, environmental degradation, cultural distress and community anxiety. Today, there is a real plan for a brighter future.
Gabriel is committed to building a new state-of-the-art mining facility that will reinvigorate the local economy and honor cultural patrimony, while setting world-class standards for environmental and social responsibility. This brief backgrounder highlights Gabriel’s commitment to the local community and the positive impact Gabriel’s proposed development at Rosia Montana will have on the region’s residents.
A Community At Risk: Rosia Montana - At A Gla
nce
The residents of Rosia Montana are isolated and vulnerable. This is a community at risk due to:
• Poor Housing Conditions: More than half the homes in the village lack reliable running water, while two-thirds have outdoor latrines. Nearly one in five homes has simply been abandoned because there is no resale market.
• Inadequate Medical Services: Although the people of Rosia Montana suffer from high rates of disease – due to severe water pollution – they lack access to most medical services.
• Little Hope: High unemployment has forced younger residents to move to other areas for work, leaving many parents and elderly residents isolated and vulnerable.
Gabriel’s Commitment To The People Of Rosia Montana - A Potential Turning Point
Gabriel has developed a plan to strengthen the local community and enhance social and economic opportunities for all.
• Upgraded Housing: Gabriel will provide local residents with a choice of new homes with modern features in a newly constructed village, offering all of the amenities that make a place a community.
• A New Start: For those residents who choose to move from Rosia Montana to be closer to family members who have already left the area, Gabriel offers a resettlement package at fair replacement market value, based on World Bank standards.
• Improved Health Care: Gabriel pledges to build a new medical centre and assist in upgrading the local hospital to improve health care in the region.
• Educational And Economic Opportunities: To give young people in the region the chance for a better life, we will build a new school equipped with a new gym, with computers in every classroom and a pre-school program.
• Sustainable Development: We will also establish a micro-bank for non-mining enterprises, provide skills training for local residents and grant scholarships to community residents.
